About Us

Hello,

I would like to introduce myself, to all our past and future guests, my name is Alex Witzel and I recently purchased Goose Bay Camp on Nungesser Lake from Andrea Langford last April. I am from Minnesota and have enjoyed going up to Nungesser Lake for about twelve years. Everyone has a happy place, and this is mine which motivated me to purchase the camp. My Dad and I went up to the camp in September and we enjoyed ourselves, but also worked hard on several maintenance and improvements to the property. Fishing was great, perhaps because the fish have not seen a lure for two and a half years due to COVID-19 and the fires, and the 2022 season should be exceptional.

This upcoming year I am planning to make a few changes to the camp such as, metal roofs, solar, a sand point and pump, new lights, electric refrigerator, and an ice maker in the shower house and cabin one might get an AC unit. The icehouse will be full of ice also for backup. I am hoping to accomplish all the improvements this winter. We will have new grills and fish fryers, a satellite phone for emergencies, and a couple of good first aid kits. I have purchased six new Lund Rebel XL boats that can accommodate three persons per boat, and all have new 40-hp four stroke Honda tillers with rock guards and come equipped with a Helix 5 depth finder/GPS with a lake map. I foresee our biggest challenge is going to be fuel for the boats. I hope to have two 1,000-gallon fuel tanks installed at camp; however, all the fuel is going to have to be hauled in over the winter. I am asking everybody to do their best to conserve fuel. My fuel cost is $13.25 a gallon US, by the time I get it to camp. If I need more fuel in the summer, I will have to have it flown in.

The new procedure for getting into camp will be stop for minnows at Andrea's camp at Lac Seul as you did previously, pickup licenses either in Ear Falls or Red Lake, then call Matt at Nungesser Lake Lodge when leaving Red Lake to arrange pickup at the river landing. His number is 1-647-478-2904. From there it is a comfortable ride down the river to his dock, then load your gear into his trailer and truck, drive to the lake and unload into our boats. Then it is off to the outpost. Make sure you talk to Matt and tell him what time you will leaving camp. The transportation procedures to arrive at the camp have changed due to the old river portage being difficult and not safe and can no longer be used by our guests. Our hope is that all guests get in and out with no injuries.

With all the camp improvements along with increasing costs for fuel and materials, naturally I must increase the rates. Our new rate will be $850 USD plus 14% GST per person for a week Saturday to Saturday. I will also offer a discounted rate for minor children, contact me directly if that applies. If you wish to rent the whole camp, please call and we can discuss. There will be tools and equipment in the old red cabin, or tool shed. We will have extra props, and one lower unit.

Since I live in Minnesota, you will truly be on your own at Nungesser Lake Outpost. If there is a medical emergency, see Matt at Nungesser Lake Lodge, but since he also has a business to run, I ask you not bother him with other concerns. I will have tools and some parts available in camp for minor repairs, as necessary. If a motor is damaged and you are able, I ask that you make repairs. If it requires a trip to Red Lake, I ask that you make the repairs if you are able. If you find something in need of repair in the cabins, please let me know on your return and take a picture if possible so I can get it addressed as soon as possible. Deposits are nonrefundable, but are transferable to the next year.

Here is hoping for a successful 2022 season! Ice permitting, I expect to get in and open camp second week of May.

Best regards,

Alex Witzel
